The Hoop of Learning is an indigenous college and personal development program for high school students in the Lincoln Public School District. The first half of the program, students will attend an American Indian studies course (AIS 100) that will introduce them to indigenous worldviews, colonization, U.S. relations with tribal nations, and contemporary issues.

The second half of the program, students will focus on college and career preparation and success. College recruiters and advisors from tribal colleges, Southeast Community College, and the University of Nebraska will give presentations on various career interests and college pathways. Additionally, each of these educational institutions will host culturally informative events that will showcase their programs and services and this includes the Lincoln Public School District.

Throughout the program, students will attend monthly talking circles that will focus on indigenous teachings at the Lincoln Indian Center. After the completion of each course, with at least 70% attendance, students will receive a certificate of completion as well as a $1,000 stipend.

The UNL Hoop of Learning Program will begin on March 21, 2024.
